We often get the question:
I want
to carve a spoon! What kind of tools do I need?
Because of that we have made this page and here we want to give you tool
hints to different woodwork.

Carve a spoon or ladle:
Start with
Carving axe 0,8kg to form the material.
Use Carvingknife 16x70mm or 17x60mm to fine carving the material.
Spoon knife standard uses to form the spoon or ladle. Then you need
both left and right.
Spoon knife bigbrother for fine carving the spoon or ladle.
You can also use Carving knife 11x35mm to make nice details.
To form inside a little bit deeper ladle you can use
Hooked gouge 16cm.

Carve a bowl, spoon or ladle:
Start with
Carving axe 0,8kg to form the material.
Use Carvingknife 16x70mm or 17x60mm to fine carving the material.
For bigger ladles you can start to cut the inside with
Adze 0,6kg.
To form the bowl, spoon or ladle use
Hooked gouge 22cm or 16cm (depends
on how deep the bowl are)
Diameter and deep of the bowl decide which size you should have on the gouge.
A deep shape of the edge gives deeper mark and is easier to carve with in the
beginning of the work. A level form is more for fine carving.
You can also use
Spoon knife standard and Spoon knife bigbrother to
form the bowl, spoon or ladle inside. Then you need both left and right.
Carving knife 8x50mm is good to use when you want to form the handle of
for example the spoon.

Make a dish, bowl and trough:
Adze 0,6kg, 0,7kg or 1,3 kg makes the hard work inside. Bigger adze to
bigger trough and dish.
Beating gouge turned or straight (depends on the deep) to use before fine
carving.
To the fine carving you use
Bent or Straight gouge or Straight upnosed gouge.
A deep shape of the edge gives deeper mark and is easier to carve with in the
beginning of the work. A level form is more for fine carving.
Draw knife 27cm or Timber drawknife 32cm are good tools for forming
outside.

Tools for timbering:
All
these tools are very strong and developed in cooperation with practised
timberman.
Timber axe 1,6kg to form the material. Is shafted with right, left or
straight handle.
Cutting axe 1,8kg. A heavy axe that you could use for example when you
want to cut inside the timber corner.
Timber chisel uses when you want to form inside the timber corner.
Timber drawknife 32cm is an excellent tool to form and bark the log.
Narrow axe 1,9kg is a variation to the timber chisel

For children, small hands
and small works:
Children carving knife
15x50mm that is pointed, with round point and with a cut point. We also
have an leather sheath to the knife.
Children spoon knife have the same blade as standard, but the handle
is smaller
Splitting iron. A safe way to split a material with. You can hit on
it with an wood club.
Carving axe 0,4kg is an light axe to form a material with.
Draw knife 14cm is together with
Shavinghorse excellent tools

For bushcraft:
Cutting axe 0,7kg. An light and
flexible axe to cut up wood to the fire.
Carving knife 17x60 or 16x70 with leather sheath. Good knives to
carving or to split splinters.
Of course the Carving set are an natural friend in the backpack! |

For carving and engraving:
Engraving knife, oblique
and
Engraving knife, knife. Has grinding surface. They work fine both
sculptural and with engraving.
Mini gouge. Have a thin
blade which gives a fine control when making spoons and fine carving work.
Engraving knife 35x8mm.
The edge is straight and the back is bend. The point of the edge gives fine
control.
Carving knife 11x35mm and
8x50mm is two carving knives with thin (which gives short grinding
faces) and pointed blades which gives fine control
Turned mini V-gouge 60.
Whith it´s thin turned blade, it is an excellent tool for decorating
leathersheths and engraving.

For rough sculptering:
Sculpture axe 0,8kg have
almost an straight edge with marked corner both up and down.
Adze 0,6kg, 0,7kg or 1,3kg
for shaping the material.
Beating gouge turned or straight

Make your own knife:
Knife blade: We have 9 different
sizes of our knife blades. Our knifeblade is forged from round toolsteel
material. The blade is handforged and therefore not entirely flat. Beware at
fastening in vice. This is also importantly when striking on the shaft. |

Blunt chisel and Pointing chisel
Turning Gouges: Big turning gouge have a round edgeform. Middle turning
gouge and small turning gouge have pointed edgeform.
Hooks: Big hook, Middle hook and Small hook
Hooked gouge: A steady complement to the
hooks, but you shouldn't use it for small things. |
